Goal & Purpose

Creating the Perfect Loop

The goal of this project was to design a seamless, looping animated GIF that would feature a cute cat on a boat trying to catch a fish. Commissioned by Andrew Miller, the project aimed to create a playful and visually calming animation suited for web audiences. This GIF was intended to resonate with social media enthusiasts, animal lovers, gamers, streamers, and creative communities. Its whimsical and relaxing nature makes it versatile—ideal for overlays, playful posts, and creative inspirations, appealing to both kids and adults.  The primary challenge was ensuring the animation looped perfectly, enhancing the soothing effect and keeping it captivating without interruptions. As this was my first GIF creation, I thoroughly researched techniques for seamless looping and effective storytelling within the limitations of a short animation. The final result aimed to strike the perfect balance between playfulness, charm, and technical precision.

From Concept  to Animation

The project began with research to develop the idea, including the colour palette, art style, and overall theme for the animation. Once the concept was defined, a timeline sketch was created to map out the animation sequence. Each asset was carefully drawn, exported, and separated for animation, then rigged and prepared in After Effects. The animation was adjusted and refined to ensure smooth motion, focusing on creating a seamless loop.  The project came together smoothly, as the strong initial concept guided the entire process. The client provided positive feedback, with the only suggestion being to adjust the gif’s size and cropping to reveal more of the background. Due to the short project duration, there was no time for major revisions before delivering the final version. The end result successful.

Bringing the Concept to Life

I was really pleased with how the final concept came together, especially how the colours, art style, and seamless loop aligned with my original vision. The client was also very happy with the outcome and had no revisions or further requests, expressing satisfaction with the project.  Looking back, I wouldn’t change my approach, as it effectively brought the project to life in a way that met both my expectations and the client’s needs. This project was a valuable learning experience—being my first looped gif, I gained skills in creating illustrative assets for animation in After Effects, designing smooth video loops, and exporting functional gifs for web use.
